If anyone could help me, I might just give you my first born! ;) I'm distressed, frustrated, and desperate...

The other night I was on my iPhone (3GS) and it just shut off. I tried to manually turn it back on but nothing happened so I plugged it in. When I plugged it in, all that happened was the white apple appeared and stayed put. I tried holding the power button and home button to reset and it did...but then the screen prompting you to connect to iTunes came up. Once I connect to iTunes, it states that the iPhone is in recovery mode and must be restored. When I unplug it from a power source, the screen goes black and until you hook it back up to a charger, it stays that way. I have tried over and over to try to get it back to normal without restoring it. I have majorly fallen behind on backing up (yes, hard lesson learned and trust me, I will now back up regularly)...but I have many pictures, many paid downloaded apps and songs, contacts, and sentimental messages that it just kills me to lose.

So I ask you Apple geniuses out there if you know of any tricks or even remote possible fixes that I could attempt before succumbing to restoring the iPhone to factory settings. I will try anything to save what was saved on my iPhone.

No it was not jailbroken. I bought and use it through AT&T.

I don't know what those are so if you could let me know, I'd appreciate it!

You have to restore. You may lost your photos and texts. But your paid apps and songs await you on iTunes. You paid for them, so you can redownload them from the app store.

I will and admitted my mistake...but I'm asking for advice/tips and if there is anything I can try...

Thanks dotme for the info.

Your apps are easy to restore, they'll show up as purchased in the app store.

iOS 5.1 supports iCloud for backup of most of your data, make sure it's turned on next time.
