Hello all,

I recently purchased a 16 inc MBP ProMax. This morning I received the following message at start up support.apple.com/mac/restore with a black screen. I also have a 2016 MBP. So I went on that to look up this error message and it give some instructions on connecting the two computers so I used a USB-C cable to connect the two computers but I can not get the 2021 to restore using apple configurator 2. I believe I plugged the USB-C cable in the correct ports. Anyone have any suggestions.

Thank you

Did you follow the instructions for revive/restore?

Powering up the MacBook is DFU mode can be tricky. You might need to try more than once.

1. Press the power button.

2. While holding down the power button, at the same time press all three of the following keys for about 10 seconds:

  • The right Shift key
  • The left Option key
  • The left Control key
3. After 10 seconds, immediately release the three keys but continue to hold down the power button until a DFU icon appears in Apple Configurator 2 on the first Mac.

Note: You won’t see any screen activity from the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro you’re trying to revive or restore. If the MacBook Pro uses a MagSafe connector, you won’t see the LED charging light.

YES I tried the above I should have mentioned that in my original post. I also called apple tech support and spoke to someone although they did not sound all that knowledgeable. Still no luck looking to avoid going into the apple store

I just spoke to another advisor. This guy was much better. But could not fix the problem. Im off to unitec in a couple hours

OP:

You're in Los Angeles (or close by)?
And you have a new MacBook Pro with a serious problem?

Well...
It's under warranty.
Take it back and either have them fix it, or replace it.

The exact same thing happened to me with a 16" M1 Pro Max. I had to take it in. They tried to do a revive and restore several times, and in the end it was concluded that the logic board needed a replacement. This was one month after having the machine. Mine is a 16" with 64GB RAM, 4TB SSD.

Sadly Unitec did not ship it when they were supposed to. Now I have another week to wait.
