Hello to you all. The issue is that I want to be able to upgrade from GarageBand to logic. But I was advised that the current update my iMac doesn't allow for logic. I was told by a gentleman here that the mac0S 13 Ventura, is the update I need in order to be able to use logic on my iMac. Is this accurate? Also, I was told to backup my data before updating to Ventura, I would like to know is there a danger of your Mac when updating, for instance updating to Ventura? Most of my stuff is backed up, what hasn't been backed up, I will back up, before upgrading. Thanks in advance.

Without your iMac's model number and release year, version of macOS currently installed, and version of Logic you wish to upgrade to, nobody can advise.

Logic Pro requires macOS Sonoma 14.4...at least the latest version in the App Store does.

If you haven't purchased it before, it'll be tricky to get it on Ventura. You'd need to find/borrow a compatible Mac to make the purchase on first (to get it into your purchase history). Then you would be able to download it in Ventura from your purchase history and be offered an older version that's compatible with your Mac.

As for backing up, yes...you should always back up before upgrading. There's no danger in upgrading, but always good to have a backup in case something doesn't go as planned.

Thanks for the reply. I talk about the things you asked about here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/help-about-updates.2432073/page-2?post=33293349#post-33293349

I don't have the option of getting it on another computer. Should I download Monterey 14.4 or Ventura? thank you

I was told in the thread I started that I shared with you, on the second page, that macOS Ventura will be ok for Logic Pro.

Sorry, I got the OSes mixed up and updated my original post. I meant to say Logic Pro requires Sonoma instead of Monterey.

The information in that thread is now old and outdated. The latest version of Logic Pro now requires macOS Sonoma 14.4. Your 2017 27-inch iMac does not support Sonoma. Unfortunately, you missed the opportunity to purchase/download Logic Pro directly on your Mac using Ventura.

At this point, your options are to either:
  • Upgrade to Ventura and do the workaround I mentioned above to run an older version of Logic Pro.
    • You just need to borrow another computer running Sonoma or newer to complete the purchase with your account. You don't need to run Logic Pro on that computer. Once it's purchased, you can go back to your Mac and download an older version through your purchase history.
  • Get a new Mac.

This is very unfortunate, there must be a way around it, other than the options you suggested. Running an older version of Logic Pro is not something I want to do. I'm not sure what to do right now.

Im going to do some research.

On the App Store, it says: "Compatibility:macOS 14.4 or later."

When I press 'software update' it doesn't even show any updates on the App Store. It only shows '6 incompatible updates" and when I press on it, the updates are: iMovie, keynote, pages, numbers, garageband and hp smart for desktop." There are no software updates showing up at all.

There may be another way to update, maybe I can visit websites and do it that way, I really don't know.

I googled download Sonoma, and it came up, on the App Store with the ability to download.

That screen doesn't mean anything. If you click the Download button, you'll get a message stating that your Mac isn't compatible. This is what I get on my old 2017 MBP that maxed out with Ventura:

You can also check the list here and see that your Mac isn't compatible:

Well, there is...by using OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OCLP), but I don't think that's something you'd be comfortable using. It's not supported by Apple, more likely something could go wrong, and you need to know what you're doing. Who knows what the performance would be like as well. Maybe someone here, or on some other forum about OCLP, can comment about their experience with it on a Mac similar to yours and also running Logic Pro.

I don't blame you about not wanting to run an older version of Logic Pro. Personally, if I were going to plunk down US$200 for Logic Pro, I would want to be using a newer Mac so that it's guaranteed to run well and can get updates for years to come.

Hi. I will have to do some research about this, I hope there is a way to be able to use the latest Logic, without buying a new iMac. Maybe if I download Ventura or Monterey, there will be a way.
