I have a 3G iPhone that I successfully updated to iOS4, but while itunes was installing a backup of all my app's & music, my iPhone crashed causing it to go into an endless loop of reboots.

I was able to stop it by holding both the sleep/wake button & home button; and i was able to go into DFU mode to restore the iphone, however every time itunes waits for the iphone & the progress bar shows up on the phone, it crashes and boots up again, going back into restore mode. iTunes gives an error 9.

I've tried both DFU & Restore modes to force iTunes to do a complete restore of the FW, but still it dose not wanna go past the progress bar.

Any help would greatly appreciated. =(

p.s. is there any possible way i can use irecovery to manually flash or clear the iphone? irecovery can pick up the phone and call it out of recovery mode, but then it goes back to the endless re-boots again.
