HELP! Beginner seeks help with drawing maps on a Mac?

Hi guys,

I am looking to draw a map - either from scratch (preferably not!) or by using a streetmap. I then need to put arrows and keys on top of it. I am looking for some simple, free software to do this.

This is for an academic dissertation.

Any help much appreciated!
