I have a macbook pro and when I connect it to my external ASUS VH226H, 1920x1080 22" moitor all the fonts except the ones that are part of the OS not in external software are really blurry and rubbish. I've used the following apps and it all looks terrible: Coda, Firefox, Safari, Adium, Adobe CS5. I've tried changing the font smoothing options via terminal and it has made no difference.

Yes it's running in native resolution 1080p (there was no 1929x1080 in the drop down list so I selected 1080p) and I'm using dvi.

try changing the refresh rate.
I have a mini hooked to my tv also running 1080p, at 24 Hz it's all fuzzy, but at 60 it's clear, both with the same resolution.

I'm having exactly the same problem with the same external monitor!

fonts other than the SO are blurry..

I'm connected by HDMI, 1080p and refresh rate of 50 or 60mhz changes nothing!

Same monitor, same problem here....

I'm having the same problem but with an Acer AL2017. The problem must be with OS X since this monitor works great with other computers. It's very frustrating.
