My 13 yr old son has asked for an imac for Christmas for gaming purposes. I have the chance of buying the following second hand desktop from a work colleague

Mac OS X
Version 10.5.1
Processor 2.16 GHz intel core 2 duo
Memory 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

Is this of any use for what my son would be looking for?

Thank you for taking the time to read this and indeed reply :)

With those specs, it's only suitable for all work and no games.

If he wants to play some games, I'd suggest at least the following:
2.0GHz quad-core processor
8GB RAM
512MB of graphics

If budget is a concern, buy an iPad mini with retina display for him instead. There's thousands of games on the iOS App Store and should be enough to satiate his desires :)

Won't be much use for any modern 3D intensive games which are the kind any self respecting 13 year old wants to play!

Also, buying a Mac specifically for gaming is always going to end in disappointment. You could get great new PC with a very good graphics card for the same money that a second hand iMac will cost. Or a PS4. Get a PS4 if he wants something decent for gaming.

That's why I suggested the iPad Mini with retina display :) besides, he can carry it anywhere with him.
