Help! Cannot select AirPods as sound output

Hi all,

I'm able to pair my Airpods to my iPhone and my MBP no problem. I can see the AirPods in the bluetooth menu and in the Sound system prefs. However, I cannot actually choose the AirPods as an output device. E.g. if the current output device is Internal Speakers, I can click on AirPods directly below that, but after a brief moment it reverts to Internal Speakers again. Hence I cannot actually use the Airpods as an output, even though the Airpods pair successfully via Bluetooth.

Any ideas? Thanks.
