Help: Can't Search PDFs in Skim -- Alternatives?

I am currently running 10.9.5 on my Mac Mini and attempted to search a PDF using the open source software Skim, but it is not responding / listing any results--even words that are listed on the current page; however, OS X's Preview will search the same document. I really like Skim, but is there any way to fix its apparent inability to search a PDF document? Are there better alternatives?

Search
Notes
Editing and Merging would be nice.
