My TiPb 867 is about a year old and the combo drive works fine for cds and dvds. It will even read burned cds just fine. The problem is that when ever i insert a blank cd it will try for about a minute to read it, give up, and spit it back out. I would say its a hardware issue, but every once and a while I'll put a blank disc in and it will mount it almost instantly, and it burns just fine. I've tried different brands of CDs (right now im triyng memorex 80 min) but they all seems to fail the same amount (98% of the time).
This really sucks because I'm a fledgling record producer and I need to have a drive to burn my master discs on.

I even tried resetting the PMU, no help....

Ive tried with programs running, and without...
Ive tried plugged in, and battery,
with peripherals (mbox, FW HD) pluged in, and not.

The times when it works dont seem to be based on anything. Sometimes its after I restart, but definalty not always. One time it worked when I sprayed canned air in the slot, but only once, and i tried at least like 5-10 times, even used a lens cleaner.

If I set up a playlist in iTunes and click burn it says to put in the disc, I do, it tries to read it (says checking media), and then spits it out.

Any ideas?

what type of CD media are you using?

CD-RW, CD-R

I have noticed anyways in my case that CD-R media has never given me a problem. If you use CD-RW media it might not get along with your computer.

Have you tried Verbatim CD-Rs? They're what Apple recommends, and I haven't had a single problem with them (which is more than I can say for some other brands...)

Are you sure that the speed of the media matches the characteristics of the drive? If the media is too fast for the drive, it might work inconsistently.

I've only used Yamaha CD-Rs in my Superdrive or my Yamaha recorder, but I know that we used to have to match things very carefully.

Ill pick up some vverbatims and try it out, hopefully that works

Ill let you know

thanks...

same burning problem

alexdugman,
I have the exact problem burning blanks! Every now and then one will burn. This started about a week ago.If you figure it out I sure would like to know and I will do the same.Thanx, lazarus
BTW, I use a PB667, 10.2.8, and Toast TI

Reading the title of the thread, I can't wait until some Windows publication prints a stroy about racist Apple drives.

If it's younger, take it back,
If it's older - Did you get the extend warrenty?

If yes proceed to your nearest Apple store with your computer.
If No proceed to your nearest apple store with your computer and a briefcase full of cash.

good luck with your music productions and hope you get the problem fixed.

update... :-( can i get a price quote?

Well, Imations worked ok, 60% or so of the time.

Verbatims, (the suggested brand)

0%....
it wont read one, and ive been triyng for 2 hours.

So... anyone have any idea what this might set me back? I have to get it fixed, my comp is just over 1 year old, and i didnt spring for the apple care (bad call).
