ok i'm trying to watch tv from my macbook (aluminum) on my tv; netflix, hulu, etc. i bought all the cords for connection but when in plug everything in, only wallpaper shows up on the tv, and also the settings window when i bring it up. a firefox window is nowhere to be found! are there setting i need to change? help please :)

check your Displays preferences.

In System Preferences -> Displays.

You can define if you want the external display (your TV) to mirror your Mac Screen or to use it as a second screen. If for 2nd screen you define in which one the apple menu will be.
Also there is a button to gather windows so you can see tje settings for both screens in your Mac.
