HELP!! Controlling media players when it is inactive

Is there ANY media player that has global hotkeys that allow people to control (stop, pause, move forward 5 seconds, etc.) while working on another application?

I want to listen to my lecture recordings while writing notes on Microsoft Word, so I'm looking for a player that can be controlled while I am on MS word.

Thanks for the reply, but that is not what I was talking about.
I am using the newest Mac by the way, and I am well aware that it comes with a built-in keyboard function that lets you skip "across" the sound files -- not "within" a sound file

You hold F7/F9 to fast-forward or rewind.
