I have a 19" Samsung monitor with a resolution of 1440x900 but for some reason my macbook is only reading it as 1280x720 or 1080i. It looks pretty awful on both. How do I get it to recognize the real resolution?

Try SwitchResX -- it will try to find usable resolution settings for the display and add them to the profile. Sometimes it seems to be necessary ... mostly for LCD TVs, but also sometimes monitors for whatever reasons don't play nice with the video card you have out of the box.

Still doesn't seem to be working. When I switch it, I lose picture and my screen says "not supported mode"

I have this connected through DVI. Might it help to connect through VGA? I don't want to spend money on cables and adapters if it won't do anything.

Are you sure your resolution settings for 1440x900 are correct? You can certainly also try VGA, but if it has a DVI input, and accepts a digital signal, it ought to work.
