I apologize, I am sure this question has been asked numerous times, but I want to make sure I don't screw this up... I have a 3GS that I am getting ready to sell, and I want to erase all of my data from it.

It currently has the original baseband (4.26.08) and is running iOS 4.3.3. Unlocked and jailbroken.

I would like to erase all of my data, and upgrade it to iOS5, if possible, but making absolute sure I keep the unlock available.

Can someone kindly point me in the right direction? Thank you in advance!

How do I go about updating it to 5.0.1? I assume not through iTunes, correct? I know very little about this so please forgive the stupid questions... :)

Just update it to 5.0.1 and make sure not to restore from your backup

WELL DON'T DO THAT!!! you will lose the baseband and unlock!!!

Make a custom IPSW with Extra's in redsn0w preserving your original baseband.

It will finish with a cusom IPSW starting with NO_BB

Put your phone in DFU-mode

With that custom IPSW ALT-restore(mac) or shift-restore (win) in itunes.

You will have a iphone 3gs with 5.01 with your original baseband that you can unlock with ultrasn0w. Set it up as a new phone, it will have no data from your previous phone.

@777 be careful at what advise to give people!! besides that an MD11 beats an 777

Thanks guys!

To recap, here is what I plan on doing - please correct me if any of this is wrong:

1) Downloading iOS 5.0.1 right now
2) Use redsn0w to modify that IPSW file to keep my baseband
3) Go into DFU mode
4) Do a shift-restore using that modified IPSW file
5) At this point I will have 5.0.1 will my original baseband that I can then use to unlock using ultrasn0w

Sound good? Thanks again!

OK, so I upgraded to iOS5 and I see that my original baseband is still there (good news!). Now trying to jailbreak/unlock it again using redsn0w, but it says I need a version of the IPSW. I go to Extras -> Select IPSW and point it at the NO_BB_OLDROM version and it says it isn't supported. At this point can I use the regular IPSW file for the jailbreak or will that screw things up?

Yes, you will need to use the regular IPSW file for that.
