HELP! Error logging onto Mac Pro with Snow Leopard

Trying to log into my Mac Pro with SL, I get the following error and can get no further.

"You are unable to login to the user account "Netdog Dog" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error an occurred."

Does this sound like a hardware or software thing? Any ideas?

Do you have any other account you can use?
Is your home directory located on another volume than Mac OS X?

Home directory is on another volume.

When I tried to install a fresh copy of OS X SL on Mac Harddrive (the drive that has OS X installed on it), it wouldn't let me. Had a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark on that drive.
