My Canon XL H1 is hooked up but FCP can't see it. Log and Capture displays "No Communication" despite making sure the camera is on playback mode, and the Capture Settings are fine. iMovie 08 and HD can see the camera and import the clips with no problem. I've tried swapping FireWire cables too.
 
It's because FCP thinks you have a DV camera attached when you really have an HD camera attached. Quick fix, actually:

In FCP, go to the FCP menu and select Easy Setup. Then select the appropriate setting (probably a form of HDV, just make sure you have the right fps).

And you're all set!
