Help for dual monitor display on HDMI

I got a 15 rmbp, I hooked that up with an HDMI cable into a 6 yr old HDTV that goes up to 1080p with a fairly low res, 1024x768 or might be a little higher but it works on PS3, i think the telly detects it but it gives me a dark or black screen. Can sth be done? Thanks in advance.

It won't allow me to adjust the res. Am i doing sth wrong?

System Preferences > Displays -- and then choose Scaled.
