I am trying to help my friend with his 12" powerbook. He accidentaly dopped it yesterday, and now when he powers it up "The apple screen pops up and tries to load, but after a while it gives up and pops up a "no smoking logo" but without the cigarette." Any ideas, i told him to try booting into safe mode, but that did not work. I am thinking hard drive failure? Please advise.

try to start it up with the osx hardware test disk, i think its dvd #2. Turn on the computer holding "c" and see if it boots up. If it does then its most likely a harddrive error (i believe the prohibited sign means it cant find the system files). If it boots from the cd, run the hardware test, it will tell you whats wrong.
