All right. So I'm not sure exactly where the problems began, but it seems like some of them started a week ago or so and they've been growing. I have an i7 2.93 GHz 27" iMac with 16GB of memory, with all the latest software updates. Here is what's going on.

1. Final Cut Pro freezes shortly (but not immediately) after launch every time, the first time you open it upon bootup. It will not boot again subsequent times at all. Additionally, sometimes it kills the Dock beyond repair.

2. The iMac is extremely, extremely slow to shut down, log off, or restart (it takes in excess of ten minutes to do any of these things). If, however, I force it to shut down, it'll boot up just as quickly as you'd ordinarily expect.

3. Some other random, video-related applications have been having serious trouble, required multiple reinstalls to work; particularly MPlayer X, Movist and VLC (all of which rely on ffmpeg to work).

4. I've repaired permissions and checked out the disks numerous times; I have tried creating a second account. FCP still won't run; the computer still wont' shut down, log off, or restart on any kind of reasonable timetable.

I know the inclination is going to be to tell me to do an erase and install, but as I've got a project due tonight in FCP, I'd really rather wait to do that later if at all possible. Any suggestions? Ideas?

EDIT: just figured it out. it was an external hard disk causing all the trouble; when I force ejected it, everything came back. not sure why, but I'm glad.
