Help! Grad student in dire need of Word Help

Hi all - sorry if this is the wrong place to post this…new to the mac world
I have word for Mac and am trying to format my research paper.
When I try to insert the page number it shows up as {PAGE} not the actual number. I can only see the number when I convert it to a PDF. I need to submit my work in word…anyone know how to fix this extremely irritating and time sucking problem?????
