I am trying to do a clean install on my 15" PB... found the original CDs that came with it... when I boot up with the 1st cd in the drive... the machine goes haywire..... I get a big power icon and it says to press the power button for a few seconds to reboot... and all this typing starts going across the screen.... what do I do???

That's a kernel panic, basically a total system crash. Are you sure you have the right Install disks? They are specific to each model of Mac.

Then the most likely cause is third party peripherals. Do you have anything plugged into any of the USB or Firewire ports? Also have you got third party RAM in the memory slot? If the answer is yes to either question, remove the offender then try again.

Why are you doing a clean install? Is it because you were having problems before? Trying running the hardware test on one of the CDs.

how do I do that? I am doing a clean install because I am giving the PB to my wife...
My iBook G4 has a CD labeled "Additional Software & Apple Hardware Test". Find something similar and boot to it.

i wont reboot from the cd... not even when I press the option key in order to try the hardware test... when i eject the CD it starts up fine...

Turn off the powerbook and hold down the option key right after hitting the power button.
