Anybody know any cheap places for hard drive recovery? I have a 2.5" 250GB Hitachi hard drive, and it has mechanical issues. I've lost about 75% of my data, but at leas I have an extra hard drive with some of my stuff on there. It also shows damage on the label, so the warranty is likely to be void. Does anybody know about any recovery places that would quote under $300 for my request? Please let me know. Thanks!

Just exactly what kind of "issues" does it have?
Won't spin?
Spins, but makes noises?
Won't mount?
What?

I would hazard a _guess_ that data recovery by a place that can actually _do it_ will run you somewhere between $1,500-2,500 for a drive that size. I could be wrong....

Then again, with the proper tools, you _might_ be able to get at _most_ of the data yourself. Proper tools would include:
A second drive to which to recover
A "dongle" or dock with which to connect the second drive
Recovery software such as "Data Rescue" or "Stellar Phoenix Data Recovery"
The willingness to take the time needed to perform the job

I've also forgot to say I've attempted to replace the PCB and the heads after it has short circuited. The drive still spins, though, with a working PCB. The heads is all I'm worried about. I may have damaged the heads while transplanting it from a carbon-copy model of a Hitachi 250GB hard drive since it was clicking, but the PCB is still good. Then again, the heads may not have been aligned. I believe the drive is still recoverable, though.
