HELP! Iphone 3g with no sim card!

I have an Iphone 3g without the original sim card and I don't know what firmware is on it.. How can I check the firmware, and is it possible to unlock this phone?

go find an old/inactive original sim card, stick it in, hook up to Itunes and it will bring your phone to home screen.
