Hello,

First time poster here so I apologize in advance if this issue has come up before and been answered. I seem to get different answers when I search the web and I am lost so I thought I would just ask here. I am a n00b at this kind of stuff so if i did something stupid, have mercy

I have an iPhone 3GS that is running iOS 5.0 tethered jailbreak via redsn0w. The phone has a baseband of 6.15.00, serial # xx022xxxxxx, model 'MC' (I believe this means new bootrom). And looking in TinyUmbrella I have no saved SHSH blobs. <-- not sure if that matters just trying to give as much info as possible

The phone was originally running 4.1 and I used redsn0w last night to update to 5.0 while preserving the baseband at 6.15.00. The update and jailbreak completed perfectly while preserving the baseband. I was able to use redsn0w to boot the tethered device. However, this morning when I tried to boot the device using redsn0w I got a blank white screen. The phone will not go anywhere past this white screen of death. Side note: I am able to get the 3GS into DFU mode (if that helps at all).

Ok so besides fixing the white screen of death, my ultimate goal is to get this phone onto some kind of an untethered jailbreak and unlocked via ultrasn0w to be used with any sim. From what I read, I need to either preserve or downgrade the baseband in order to do this. I have read articles suggesting the program sn0wbreeze, and others saying just use redsn0w. Articles have mentioned I need to downgrade the baseband otherwise certain features won't work (GPS, etc). As sad as this sounds I can't seem to even find out what versions of iOS are available in untethered for the 3GS while keeping or downgrading the baseband. Please help!!

I appreciate you guys (and gals) taking the time to help with my problem. Thanks in advance!

I'd recommend using redsn0w to downgrade the baseband. It might take a few tries to successfully downgrade the baseband

iOS 4.1 through 4.2.1 can be untethered jailbroken using redsn0w

A tether jailbreak is available for the 3GS on 5.0, 5.1, and 6.1.3 (pointing to a 6.0 ipsw) using redsn0w

An untethered jailbreak for 5.0.1 using absinthe v0.4 or redsn0w and downloading corona from cydia

An untethered jailbreak for 5.1.1 using absinthe v2.0.4 or redsn0w and downloading rocky racoon from cydia

An untethered jailbreak for 6.0-6.1.2 using evasi0n

Thanks for replying, so I should use redsn0w to downgrade the baseband then! With all these untethered versions available, do I need to have the SHSH blobs saved in order to upgrade/downgrade to these versions of iOS? Cause I am at 5.0 right now, then can I use sn0wbreeze to upgrade to an untethered 6.0 while preserving my baseband? Or only if I have the SHSH blobs for 6.0? (which I don't). I recall reading that 4.1 is still being signed by apple so I can downgrade to that I guess?

Also, any suggestions on how to get past the white screen of death? The instructions to downgrade my baseband from the link you posted say connect the iPhone in normal mode and select "Jailbreak" in redsn0w. With the white screen of death, I can't connect my iPhone in normal mode cause I can't even get it to boot properly.. I am not able to access any part of my iPhone right now (home screen, lock screen, etc.).

Yes, redsn0w to downgrade. Specifically the version from the link I pasted above

You still need SHSH in order to upgrade/downgrade. iOS 4.1 is still being signed by apple

Have you tried dfu mode and restoring to get out?

Hi, sorry for the delay in responding here as I was out of town for the last little bit. So first off thank you very much for all your help! I was able to get the iPhone 3GS downgraded to 4.1 with baseband 05.13.04 using redsn0w. I then installed ultrasn0w to unlock the phone. Everything is working perfectly! I was hoping to be able to upgrade the iOS so I could use iMessage but b/c i don't have any SHSH blobs saved this will have to do.

I tip my hat to you sir,
Cheers
