iPod Help!! iPod mini scroll wheel

ok heres the deal just got this mini form a friend and it worked before i got it
now the wheel doesnt work (they buttons do but not the scrolling)
it is a 1st gen blue 4gb mini

i have tried cleaning the wheel and doing a restor but neither worked
any input would be appreciated.

if its under warranty take it to an Apple Store. if not then you *could* open it to see if any internal cables have snapped or come loose.

or you could just get your money back off your mate

i thought about opening it up but i wanna hear some sugestions 1st

Ask your friend if he ever spilled somthing stick on it like wine or juice that can gum them up really bad.

Have you done a reset? It might have just had a software crash.......

hold down the menu and select buttons for a few seconds and it should reboot itself.


Aslo a good idea to give the hold switch a good toggle on and off.

yes reloaded the software
it turn on and plays music just fine
just no up and down scrolling

How about a total hard restore then?

(or is that what you meant by reloaded the software?)

hmmmm

is the battery charged? is the wheel clean? have you recently gone jogging with it?

for the latter question, the sweat from your body can enter the wheel and cause it to stall or stop. this happened to me. u can just let it sit for a while, and it gets better. if thats not the problem, i have no idea. go battle it out at the apple store.

Try air blowing the scroll wheel it worked with my 1 gen mini. Otherwise open it up.
