Help iPod: Weird, Not A Scratch. .

Ok well here's the deal. .I was trying to get a previous cloudy mark off my LCD Screen by using some household chemicals (because soap and water wasn't doing the trick). I think the chemcial made it worse by leaving a resadue behind. Luckily I didn't use too much. .I don't really have any major scrapes, just this cloudy resadue.

I wish I had gotten a case when I bought the iPod back in December. I just didn't think about it at the time. I've been so paranoid about it now. . I just hope there is something I can do to clean it up. Then I'll buy a nice case for it.

Looks can be decieving. .it's not that easy to get this stuff off. .I've tried every chemical in the house that is suitable for this situation. I want to take it a step up. Any good reccomendations?
 
i hate to say it...but you really might not have a residue, but rather messed up the plastic over the screen.

if not, i would seriously just try something like computer screen wipes. nothing too strong, though again, im afraid the chemicals youve used may have damaged the screen. :(
 
What did you use to clean this. If you used Isopropyl Alchohol at any time that does leave a residue that won't come off very easily. If you did, you may want to consider ethanol. Not sure if the plastic screen can take it but in the lab we use ethanol to clean everything. It evaporates very quickly and doesn't leave a residue. Ethanol will take IPA residue off without any problem. No guarantees about the screen...so check around for yourself.
 
he used an adhesive remover that contained xylene...he basically melted the screen with a chemical. i dont think it will be fixable without replacing the screen
 
What exactly was the chemical you used. If you used something like acetone or ethyl acetate you are in trouble (fingernail polish remover). What you did was essentially dissolve the plastic cover. It can not be fixed without replacement. The top layer has been disolved. Sorry. Be carefull when cleaning. With plastic you can only use soap and water. There are several plastics which are soluble in ethanol and isopropyl alcohol. That is why you always use water on glasses, googles, etc.

Ohh, I just reread your post and saw that you used xylene. If that is the case then it is ruined.

Even if it was a little drop? How can I get it replaced?
 
Yes, even if a little drop. You dissolved the plastic. Take it to apple. The best way to get out a scratch would to probably buff it out (like a car).
 
Worth a try

I used to polish my converible's clear plastic window using a couple of plastic polishes from Meguiar's. You should be able to find them at local car parts stores at around $7 a bottle. Buff with a soft cotton cheese cloth.
