Installed OS X Lion. Tried to open iTunes and I get the following message:

"The files "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. Would you like to download iTunes now?" 2 Buttons "Quit" and "Download iTunes".

What is causing this and how can I fix it without destroying my iTunes content?

Thank you for any help!

As above.

If you were previously on 10.5 Beta, you'll need to reinstall it over the top and it'll work fine. It will keep all of your content in place also.:D

I had the same issue. You need to install (re-install) 10.4 and then it works.

Didn't have any beta software. However, I did run software update right before I downloaded and installed Lion. So maybe that didn't jive?

Thanks
