This may be a strange request, especially considering how old this phone is. I'm attempting to jailbreak a 3GS that is on 4.2.1. I've tried using Redsn0w with a 4.2.1 firmware.

Here's where it goes wrong: this is an AT&T phone with no sim card. It cannot be unlocked after turning on (can't view the about in the settings and get accurate information), all it says is a SIM card is needed for activation. I follow the steps to a tee on Redsn0w and each time it comes back almost immediately with an unexpected error. I don't really know where else to go on this, any guru's out there that can help? If there is any additional information needed I'll provide it the best I can.

Help please?

When you plug iPhone into computer, does iTunes show that it's on iOS 4.2.1?

I think redsnow has a feature that can query your device for all sorts of info, including current iOS version

I think redsn0w also hacktivates the 3GS during jailbreak too

Thanks for the reply! Nope, when I plug it into iTunes it won't tell me anything. I either get a "Activation cannot be completed at this time, contact apple" or "This phone must be restored to use" which leads to the activation one.

On redsn0w however, it does tell me that the phone is 4.2.1, but anytime I try to do something (literally any option) i either get an immediate unexpected error, or in the case of putting it into pwned DFU it says USB connection error.

What is the baseband/modem firmware version of your 3GS?

Are you able to restore the iPhone using iTunes when in DFU mode?
