Help!! Lost pictures iPhone 4

Can anyone help? About two weeks ago I had trouble sending text messages. I would hit send and I would be returned to the home screen. I deleted some text messages and this cleared up. Until yesterday when it started again...this time no text, no email downloads, no visual voicemail. When I tried to access my pictures I got a message saying "rebuilding photo library". I went to itunes and cleaned up several old apps, music, etc. but now I am missing about 500 pictures off my iphone. No they were not backed up because itunes had crashed on my computer. My phone says I have 400 photos and itunes (after a reinstall) says I have 900???? I can not find them on my computer. Are they still in my phone and recoverable? they are pictures from a trip with the family and I am devastated that they are gone. Any ideas??

If you don't have a backup, Then Sadly; I think that you have lost those photos!
