Help: Macbook freezes when highlighting text

I have several recent freezes of my Macbook (running 10.6.8) after highlighting a selection of text in any application. The blue highlighting can be stretched and seems permanently attached to the cursor. I cannot quit the app or force quit and the only way to quit is with the power button. Upon restart, things will be normal until the problem reappears without warning. I use two different mouses with my MacBook, one when traveling and another at home.
