My MacBook Pro 15" (A1226) will not start up. Hard disk spins and GPU and cpu area does heat up but there is no display nor does the fan spin. Anybody know what has happened? I don't think it's the GPU problem as I keep it well ventilated.

It sounds like...

....GPU failure, or screen connector failure. Try connecting it to an external screen if that works it's the screen if not probably the graphics card.

At 8 years old you have gotten the life out of that 2007 mac thats for sure...

Somehow... Magically... The MacBook Pro went back alive again. Hope the problem does not come back! :)

It likely will.

Those MBP have the nVidia 8600GT. That graphics card is a known ticking time bomb. There was a class action suit for that card against nVidia and apple had extended the warranty on it to 4 years. That program ended back in 2012. It'll fail completely, it's just a matter of time.
