I just set up the mail app with my email accounts but it seems to be downloading all of my emails.. from when I first opened my email account several years back. Is there anyway to set it to just download emails in the past couple of months ?

If you set your account up as IMAP, which is preferred in most cases, it will download everything, not just recent emails. After the initial download, it will stay in sync with the mail server.

so is there anyway to set it up so it downloads just what I had in the past couple of months ? Its taking up a lot of my free storage .

So does POP mail only download recent emails ? How recent ? And do the not stay in sync with the mail server ?

Does your email provider have some webinterface were you can delete all the old emails before connecting your email client.

If you can chose between POP and IMAP, please take IMAP.

I just use gmail and yahoo. I don't want to delete my old emails, still need them from time to time, just I dont want the mail app to download all of my emails in order to save storage space.

If you use gmail, why not put your old mails in the archive or in another folder you don't sync with you MAC insted of keeping them all in the inbox ?

You have something else to put in the probably less than 1 gb of space the email is going to take up?

I can't help you with Yahoo, but for Gmail go to settings at gmail.com and you can limit how many messages get downloaded to the local mail client. All the messages will still be at gmail.com.

This is under the IMAP tab.
