Help! -Mail lost 12 inbox messages

I have a .Mac/.Me mail account and use Mail.

I had about 12 important email messages in my inbox, but last night they all vanished. I found two of the messages in the Mail trash bin. The account is set to save Mail trash items for 7 days unfortunately...(I changed the preferences in Mail already to keep deleted messages for a month instead.)

I am using Mail 3.5
OS X 10.5.6

Is there any way to retrieve those older email messages?

Are they still saved in a folder someplace or is there a way to undelete items in the Mail trash bin folder before they are written over?
