Greetings forum,
Well, it's time for me to start thinking about expanding my storage options. Instead of buying another external drive to compliment my current one, I've decided to buy a 4-bay DAS (not NAS, as I have no router and no need for a NAS) but am having trouble finding the one that sits comfortably with me. So, I'm hoping my fellow members here have some advice on DAS units.
My preferences:
-4-bay
-Firewire 800 and eSata connectivity
-A no-RAID mode, where the drives all show up in OSX as separate hard disks.
-Not picky about the drive manufacturer/firmware should I need to replace a drive in the future.
-Able to handle 3tb drives
-No additional software; I just want to plug it into my Mac and have it show up like my current external drive would.
-For the sake of broadening suggestions, I'm not going to set a maximum price point for this. If you have good solutions, I want to hear them regardless of how expensive they are.
Other things:
-I'm not really picky about the looks or sounds of the box, as the room the box will be in is already noisy from fans and music/movies that's likely already playing.
-The only DAS unit that somewhat floats my boat is the OWC Mercury Elite Pro Qx2, however I'd rather not deal with RAID limitations. The reasons being I'm okay with having to clone my drives through something like Carbon Copy Cloner, and I don't like how RAID doesn't always work should I try to replace a hard drive with a drive that has similar compacity but may not be the same manufacturer/have the same firmware.
Thanks in advanced for any advice you may offer.
Edit: Does anyone know if this would do what I'm wanting it to do? I realize it lacks firewire 800, but I can buy a hub and still be paying less than other solutions.
