Hi all,

So my old iMac has finally crapped out on me (boooo!) after seven years of faithful service. So it's time to update. I currently only have my work MBP and I'm sorely needing a new personal computer because I don't like doing personal stuff on my work computer. I'm willing to wait till end of June to see if there's any announcements, but I will be pulling the trigger by end of June.

However, as I'm in Canada and MPBs are pretty expensive here, I'm trying to figure out exactly what I need so I'm not spending pointless money, so I'd love some help with it. I'll be picking up a MBP 16" as I"m pretty sure the 13" doesn't really fit my needs. Going for I TB for SSD as my software suites by themselves take up about 350GBs, plus Bootcamp on top of that for streaming.

What I'm unsure about is whether I should be looking to go for the 6-core i7 or the 8-core i9 version? This is about a $400 difference. Also, I'm heavily leaning towards 32GB of RAM as I do a lot of music stuff, and, for a computer that I hope to have for at least five years, I feel like that'll be a good investment, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on it as I know this is kind of a contentious issue.

What I'm doing in order of importance (that requires more than a toaster - ie. I won't list Netflix/browsing):
  • Music - recording/arranging/producing/everything
  • Coding - mostly iOS development (I don't think this really needs that much power, to be honest, but it's my second highest use case)
  • Game development - I'm slowly working on a game in Unity
  • Light video work with multiple audio & video tracks
  • Usually powering a second 4K monitor (not clamshell mode)
