I'm thinking of getting a new Mac desktop and laptop but I don't know which ones to get. I am going to do music production, photo editing, video editing, creating websites, stuff for school, watch movies, listen to music, and web browsing. I also like to have a dual display setup. So I'll also need a display. For the storage I don't need to get so much internal since I can buy an external USB Or Thunderbolt HDD. The budget for the both computers combined $6,500 and $1000 for accessories (display, keyboard, etc) And the new desktop will be shared with the family but mostly for my use. The laptop is for my personal use.

Consider booting from an external ssd with the iMac you already have.

Why do need a Mac and a macbook?
My MacBook will be carried from home to school or on trips. And the Mac will be for home stationary. For family use. I'll use it sometimes since the Xbox is in the basement and that's where the Mac will go so I can watch tv/play games and work.

Since you have a high budget and you are planning on using media creation apps I recommend:

  • 15" rmbp with dedicated gpu: $2500
  • 5k iMac with 1tb ssd, cpu and gpu upgrade: $3600
Total: $6100 (with edu discount ~ $5300)
