Help me decide guys

So I am currently with Tmobile here in the states and would like an iphone, but the problem is that I can't get out of my contract until it ends in 2011 without paying a ridiculous amount.... So my question is an unlocked phone able to use the Tmobile online data/wifi plan and can I legitly download apps from itunes onto my unlocked phone?

If all else fails i need to go on android...

I won't help you decide, but

Yes, if you get an iphone that is unlockable, you can run T-mobile
You will only have Edge for data as iPhone does not read the T-mobile 3G data band here is the US
Wifi works at Wifi speeds
Yes, jailbroken phones work just the same with the App Store.

Make sure you get a phone with baseband 4.26.xx and not 5.11.xx as the higher baseband cannot be unlocked to use with T-mobile.

How does ATT 3g compare against T-mobile Edge?? I'm assuming almost 2x faster???

Settings/General/About and all the way to the bottom where it says modem firmware.

I am assuming you are going to get a used phone from like Craigslist or Ebay, so you need to be able to verify this.

New phones will most likely all have baseband 5.11.xx

Do not update the phone to official Apple 3.1 or 3.1.2 or you will install the new baseband and lock the phone
