I turned on my computer earlier this evening and found that my Dock no longer appears. killall dock says there are no processes running. Finder keeps randomly relaunching. System Preferences crashes. Restarting does nothing Help! I installed iTunes 8, QuickTime 7.5.5 and Front Row 2.1.6 today and was playing Spore with a Mail window open the last time I shut down. Please, any ideas?

Boot off the OS X DVD and run Disk Utility and try to repair permissions. It sounds like one of the installs changed the Finder and Dock permissions.

Tried that, it repaired a whole bunch of permissions but didn't help. Does it need to be from the install disc? I did it using Disk Utility and I'm not sure if there's a difference. Also, how do you boot from a DVD - is it by holding down D on boot?

no, you i think its "c"..
if not hold "alt", it will show your boot options

You boot of a disc by holding C. Try repairing the disc from the DVD, if that doesn't help, it sounds like you may need to do a reinstall/archive and install or OS X.
