ok, i have 2 computers: mac pro and macbook pro.

i have 2 external hard drives: 500 GB and 300 GB

my macbook pro has a 120 GB hard drive

my mac pro has 4 hard drives: 250, 300, 400, 500 GB

both of my external hard drives are really just internal ones that are in very crappy enclosures. the 300 GB one is in the room with my mbp

the 500 GB one is in the room with the mac pro.

i partitioned the 300 GB one with one partition exactly the same size as the mpb and cloned the drive with super duper.

i'm not sure what to do with the 500 GB external and my mac pro.

the 500 GB hard drive in my mac pro has my itunes library on it, and it's pretty full. (about 72 GB free)

i've kept all my downloaded files / programs (like super duper and stuff like that - including trials that i've downloaded, etc) all of that is on my 400 GB hard drive.

nothing too much on the 300 GB hard drive right now.

the 250 is my boot drive, and it's got about 50 GB free

any advice is appreciated
 
Plainly, to back up all your data you'll need more backup space. In other words, you'll need more drives. However you might be able to work around this by not backing everything up. For example, I don't bother backing up apps or system files because they're so readily available from their original sources. Also, remember that you should have a spare 180GB or so on the MacBook Pro's external... :)

thanks. yeah i guess i do need more drives.

do you organize certain things for certain hard drives? like i have my itunes library on one internal drive. i need a better method with organizing everything else.

it's just i have a bad habit of keeping everything

and yeah, i don't have anything on my mbp's external.
 
I'm lucky. I don't have nearly the amount of stuff that you do. I have two computers and keep them in sync pretty regularly. I then backup my important stuff (mainly my Documents folder) to .Mac.

oh ok. so you don't have any movies or anything? (like imovie files or anything)
 
I have everything where Apple tells me to have it. All my documents in the Documents folder, movie sin the Movies folder and so on... A lot of it is crap and could easily be replaced so I don't bother backing it up. It's really only the documents that I must keep. :)
