Help me remember this old sci-fi tv series.

I remember seeing this sci-fi tv series as a kid, back in the eighties. It was a bit scary for me as a kid. By far the scariest character was somebody that was often depicted as a red light that would float wherever it wanted to go. I really want to remember what show it was, but I can't.

Can anybody help me with this? Both V and Twilight Zone are possibilities, but I can't find any information about the red light character...

That wasn't my first thought, based on the description, but I guess this is it.

For a cheesy series, it was often a lot of fun to watch, at least in the first season. In the second season, when it tried to be Star Trek, it lost a lot of its charm.

Sorry, I haven't been checking on this thread for a while. The Buck Rogers clip was an awesome find, but unfortunately not the series I was looking for. The Phoenix clip was also a nice find, but it was definitely a space series. And not animated, by the way.
