Hi everyone, I'm trying to make my mine about buying a rMBP, so this is my story:
I'm a multiplatform apps developer, I develop web apps with Java and non-web apps with QT, I have an iMac running ML and Ubuntu/Windows with Paralles, since my iMac is from early 2010 I was thinking of buying a new iMac with the latest technologies like SSD drives, new Intel iProcessors and etc., even though I love iMacs and enjoy big screens, the fact on being sitting on a desktop for hours was driving me crazy, so I wanted to go back to laptops and run my OS on a convenient laptop PC, but no, I thought twice and got a 15" Sony Vaio basically for running Ubuntu/Windows 8 and work at home conformtably on my sofa/bed, but... I got aware about Apple launching their new retina Laptops and at first I thought they were too much expensive and the amount of pixels would require me to buy the top model to have a decent laptop.
When I got my Vaio and while installing/using my software on Windows 8 suddenly I missed so much MacOSX on that laptop, so I tried to installed a multiple boot with Hackintosh but installation failed due to kernel panic when installing ML and the Vaio has a lot of BIOS options locked not allowing me to modify some parameters, I was able to install Ubuntu on that Vaio though.
One day I went to a Mac Store and played with a 13" rMBP, even though I know is driven with an Intel HD 4000 it seemed to me decently fast, and I realized the screen was really awesome and crisp which I like because from time time I do some photo work, and photos look amazingly nice on that screen, but since rMBP are expensive I would buy the 15", because since I run Paralles for virtualizing I would benefit from its large amount of RAM (up to 16) and the fact it has a discrete graphic card that it would extend its useful life as long as 2 years or even more unlike the 13" version.
Since I'm still in my Vaio 30-day test period, I'm thinking about returning my Vaio and take the plunge for a 15" rMBP, but... I know only few apps has been turned to retina and I would like to run Eclipse and QT without virtualizing them on any other OS, I know some legacy apps look horrible on the retina display like Office for example, even the fonts look awful, I have read on Internet some legacy software can be improve on retina by modifying some parameters and even thought the icons looked pixelated at least the fonts would look beautiful, so my questions are:
Do you think is worth it for me to exchange?
Do you think is too early for a web developer to adopt a retina machine?
Do you think QT and Eclipse would turn to retina in a little time so I can enjoy them on a retina display?
Sorry for those silly questions and the long story but I don't know what to do, I'm still keeping my old iMac, but I don't know if I would get used to Windows 8 running on a laptop as a main OS, I fell in love with retina machines.
thanks in advance, sorry for my bad English.
