I have gone to system preferences and fooled around. 10 minutes later, all I have is a blank screen and not my pretty scene that I selected!

On a mac its call "screen effects" you can goto that section and enable it, change the type and then you can also enable "hot corners" so you can turn it on. Hope that helps.

what are the hot corners?

you can setup the screen so that when you move your mouse to one or all of the corners screen effects activates. This is helpful to secure your computer without logging out of it. its a tab within the screen effects preferences
