Help me understand my eGPU

I have a 2018 13"MBP i7 and LG Ultrafine 5k connected to a Blackmagic eGPU. Powerpoint (16.22) animations and transitions are choppy. Activity monitor is showing 100% utilization of the eGPU. When I disconnect the eGPU the animations are exactly the same. I have the prefer eGPU option checked for Powerpoint. Is this simply a case where the app is not written to take advantage of the eGPU? On just my laptop, powerpoint is very smooth. Thanks for your help.
