Help me update without iBricking my phone

Hey guys,

I'm a bit new to this but I want to update my iphone software to the latest but I do not want to ruin my iphone from some of this things I've heard.

1. My Installer is v3.1

2. I used ibrickr v0.7, not sure about the version but it was not the latest one.

3. My iPhone software is at 1.0.2

How can I upgrade my iPhone software from Apple without making my phone a paper weight?
