This is my situation. I have a 2015 13 inch rMBP that I got in 2017 with 3 year applecare+ for $1099. My original idea was to keep it until the apple care ran out and then upgrade because 3 years is usually how long I use a laptop before upgrading anyway. April 2020 will be when my AppleCare runs out on this current MacBook. I was going to buy whatever low end MacBook Pro would be out then and trade this one in.

My only issue is, even from May until now, the trade in value on my MacBook Pro dropped almost $100. I am not going to do craigslist/ebay/offerup but even there the prices are dropping over time naturally. So I am thinking if I wait until April to trade my current laptop and get a new MacBook, almost 7 months, my current MacBook will probably be worth MUCH less.

So should I just get the latest refresh MBP and trade in mine now? Or wait until April 2020? Yes by April 2020 there will be another refresh of some sort vs getting one now, BUT I will be paying probably $400-500 more in April 2020 due to me losing so much trade in value for my current. Even if I get the current MBP instead of waiting for 2020, I will still enjoy the upgrade anyway. Thoughts?

I would keep the MacBook. You need it for general use, right?

Banking on a certain release date seems like a bad idea...

Well even if i traded my current i would buy the new one and trade after, and use the refund gift card towards my next apple purchase. Also if i need to be without a laptop 2-3 weeks i still have my ipad. so if you HAD to choose one of my options you would choose trading in now and getting a new macbook over waiting for some potential refresh in 2020 and paying more?

I would not update the mac just because is loosing value, you can get in 2020 the 2019 and will also have the price dropped... the 2019´s are already lowered their prices... with just a couple of month out (not on Apple of course, but on Amazon for example).

Do you like the new ones? the keyboard, touchbar, usb-c ports, etc?

Is your MBP struggling with your tasks now? do you need more power? disk space?

I want usb C, i want touch bar and i the keyboard is fine. General speed will be nice for final cut pro and other things like ableton. PLUS having something under warranty is nice in case anything happens thats why i always keep upgrading and refreshing

according to the rumors the new mbp in 2020 will have a new keyboard and slimmer bezels.
i wouldn't buy a mbp with the error-prone butterfly keyboard (and low key travel) even though apple extended the warranty for the butterfly keyboard to 4 years. and there are rumors that the slimmer bezels will be used for bigger screens (14" and 16") with comparable footprint and not for a smaller footprint in 2020 (16" in fall 2019).

that seems dope... but right now my 2015 is worth 500 from apple, and it was 600 earlier this year. so if i wait until 2020 spring maybe it wil lbe worth 100-200, and so essentially ill be paying 400$ more for a new macbook in 2020 than now

100-200 for a mbp which is 5 years old is much too low. for this price i would keep it just in case the new one needs a repair and i wouldn't have a laptop for 1-2 weeks.
you already said that you don't want to sell it over the web. maybe selling it for a reasonable price to friends or relatives is an option.

What u forget is that your new purchase will drop even more. As soon as u leave the apple shop its worth less 10-20%. A 2019 model will be about half the price once a 2020 model will hit the shelfs.

An older device loses less value than a new one.
That’s nothing new and applies to all consumer products.

So go for it, I think you had your response before making this thread ;)
