i beleive the contract states exactly what happens.
If I recall correctly the item, phone in this case, must be returned or you will have to pay the full amount. Or wait until 31 day into the contract and cancel, and then pay the $175 per phone early termination fee.

At the moment this person is distraught and trying to figure out how they are gonna come up with $600 to replace their lost phone
report it as stolen and buy again for $200, whats the big deal?
if they will not sell you one again for that price, wait a month and pay $175 + a new iphone
