My computer stays at about 40C normally but when I watch videos or dvds my computer gets as hot as 81C but the fan is still at 2000 rpm.

If my fan spun faster it should dissipate the heat more right?

Is my fan supposed to spin faster?

btw I put my umbp (mid 09 2.53ghz) on a fan cooler by antec.

help please!

macbook pros do tend to heat up a lot... in fact especially when using extensive multimedia. Your symptoms are similar to mine and my MBP has been ok for more than 3 years thank God

At 81ºC your fans should be spinning 6k rpm.

Did you install smc fan control? Uninstall that if you did.
Restart and reset the PRAM, and if that doesn't start the fans spinning faster you need to call Applecare.

no i didn't install any fan control software or anything. i guess i'll be contacting applecare.

only used mac for 2 months now. not sure what it is. haven't but will try. what does it do?

It clears out the stored settings for some hardware, and will reinstall the factory settings.

I had another thought, do the fans kick in when it's hot without the Antec fan-cooler plugged into the USB? The Antec might be overriding some fan functionality.

no they don't kick in even then. I've had to use it away from my desk before with it. can't bring a bulky fan cooler with me then. always between 1996-2001 rpm
