Help!! My iPhone 2G won't sync with iTunes..

Someone pls help me!! I have a iPhone 2G on version 2.2 firmware... recently i have been having difficulty syncing with my iTunes version 8.1... Usually the iTunes will automatically detect the iPhone, but now when i plug it in, it just charges, and doesn't sync... Pls help!!
