Help. My iphone 4 doesn't turn on anymore.

Hi there. Unfortunately I have a problem with an old iphone 4. It doesn't turn on anymore. If linked to the power adapter it turns on but you only see the image of the apple. If attached to the mac the image of the apple goes on and off.
What happened? How to fix it?

Did it all of a sudden quit working or has it been laying in a drawer for a year or so?

Yes, all of a sudden. Always been used on a daily basis.
