OK so i was using my laptop and wanted a little more kickout of the screen so i tried to turn the brightness up and i can no matter how i try with the keys it wont work and there is no other way to do it (that i know of)
can someone please help me with this problem.
also the screen doesnot get lighter or darker when i connect or disconnect the power

hm, maybe trash the .plist file in library - preferences - sysyem configuraton and either preferences, or power managment though im not sure if eaither of these would be the problem Have someone else second this before you do anything.

Do you have an external screen attached?

nope im just using the iBook screen

ok i shall wait for a couple more replys before i do this, and add it to the "if all else fails" pile

system preferences - displays - display

under the box of resolutions should be a slider (its not under the colour tab on my Mac)

also I know its a hated question by some people but have you repaired permissions, run cron scripts etc

tried all , but there is still no slider in the display tab or the colour tab.....
also there is only one resolution to select and its the default 1024 x 768 and there is no 800 x 600 or anything else

so if anyone knows how to fix this please help

I don't know if trashing the prefs will solve the problem or not but you don't need to wait for a couple of days, it's not a big deal. You system will just make a new pref file as soon as you try to modify it. You are not trashing anything important. If it makes you feel more secure just drag it to your desktop then if the problem is not solved you can put it back if you want.

EDIT: its not any different in the root user
also its not asif the volume adjustment keys dont work its just the brightness ones

I don't use my iBook much these days, but I recall that the screen is slightly dimmer when running on battery power than when plugged in, even with the brightness all the way up. I imagine this doesn't help you much but who knows.... Maybe check your energy saver prefs?

checked, it does dimm when its been idle for a bit but does not change when i plug in or remove the power cord

quick question

Hi guys, just a quick question: whenever I try to modify something on system preferences -> energy saver (something like the "automatically reduce the brightenss of the disbplay before sleep") my changes go back t the original defaults and tu a "custom" energy mode. Is there any option I have to uncheck to make sure I can customize everything and keep it as I want it? thx!!!

This is a long shot, but is the Shift key stuck? This will cause the computer "safe boot" and you won't be able to adjust the brightness.
